Transfer moves management of your LEI code from one accredited provider to another, at any time.
Renewal is required every 12 months, regardless of which provider currently manages your LEI code.
The LEI passes through PENDING_TRANSFER and then PENDING_ARCHIVAL status, with reporting unaffected throughout.
Only the provider currently managing your code can complete the renewal and revalidate your data.
Your 20-character code never changes, and only the managing provider is updated in the GLEIF record.
Your entity's reference data is re-verified against authoritative sources to confirm it remains accurate and current.
Any unexpired prepaid years with your previous provider do not carry over once the transfer is completed.
Renewal does not affect your code or provider unless you have separately requested a data update.
The account holder must formally authorize the request before the current provider releases the LEI.

Your company's registration data is then checked against the official business registry as part of the standard verification step. The transfer is submitted directly to the GLEIF system, a step that can take up to seven days and may involve your current provider reaching out to you. Once that's finished, your renewal is completed in full compliance with GLEIF requirements.
Moving your LEI code to a new provider costs nothing on its own: the only charge is the renewal fee for your chosen plan (1, 3 or 5 years), starting from €59 per year with the GLEIF fee fully included. This fee applies at the time of transfer, since the transfer step itself is entirely complimentary.
Between two and seven business days is the typical timeframe for transferring your Legal Entity Identifier, depending on how quickly your current provider responds to and releases the request. LEI System actively follows up on all pending requests to minimize delays, and lapsed or soon-to-expire codes may be treated as urgent and expedited accordingly.
Yes. A lapsed Legal Entity Identifier can be transferred to LEI System and renewed as part of the same process. You do not need to apply for a new LEI number; the transfer and renewal restores your existing identifier to ISSUED status in the GLEIF index. Each legal entity may hold only one LEI for its lifetime, so renewal via transfer is the correct approach for restoring a lapsed code.
No. Because your Legal Entity Identifier is tied permanently to your legal entity rather than to whichever organization manages it, switching providers, even multiple times over your entity's lifetime, never generates a new code or requires updating references to it in existing contracts, filings or systems. Only the administrative record of which provider manages your identifier is updated behind the scenes.
Your identifier temporarily shows as PENDING_TRANSFER and then PENDING_ARCHIVAL in the GLEIF index while the request moves between providers, a status that is visible to anyone who looks up your entity during this window. This does not affect your ability to be identified for regulatory reporting, and no action is required from you unless your current provider reaches out to confirm authorization.

If your Legal Entity Identifier was involuntarily reassigned to a new provider following an LOU offboarding, you are free to transfer it to LEI System at any point afterward.
